Congratulations
Pat Cash ITA players Monika Wejnert and Celina Goetti are in fine form at present.......
Celina won the first leg of the AMT series in Caloundra with some impressive performances over the week by overcoming the number 9th, 4th, and no.1 seeds in the event to take the title. Celina’s private coach, Mike Newell, is hopeful Celina can take her form through the remaining 3 legs of the tour.
Monika continues her impressive rise on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior circuit this year, having won a G5 and a G4, finalist of two G3 events and most recently a SF showing at the B2 event in Fiji.
Both girls have represented their country in Junior Fed Cup, and earlier in the season, whilst representing Australia in the Junior Fed Cup team, Monika embarked on gaining her first points on the WTA tour by reaching the QF of a $10k event in Thailand. Both players are rising rapidly up the ITF junior rankings, with Monika ranked #94 and Celina ranked #207. In the Australian rankings (AR) Monika sits at number AR42 and Celina at number AR165. Both players will be looking to have these rankings improve once their current performances are included in the latest rankings soon to be released.
Congratulations girls!

Azzura Tennis Club Davis Cup Social - Sunday 6th April
(check out the photo's page for some pics).
With rain forecast and damp courts, it was with thoughts of lunacy that Mark started squeeging the courts at 7.00am on this chilly Sunday. The phone rang hot with the same question, and in his delirious state of mind, he told them all to come out and keep their fingers crossed!!
Play started a little late, but a big thanks to all who helped to dry the courts and prepare for the day. They were so blessed that rain was all around them, but they never had to stop playing, and as soon as the final had finished, the heavens opened!! There were 8 International teams, all who thought it was their destiny to win the cup - all but one would be sorely disappointed! At the end of the round robin stage it was South Africa, New Zealand, England, and Australia who came out on top to proceed through to the semi-finals. There was a new rule that meant the captains had to nominate their teams before the match, that prevented any one from purposely mis-matching opponents, and it put more emphasis on selection and strategy!!! Murray led his team to an emphatic win over Australia, and England avenged their Rugby World Cup defeat by trouncing South Africa to set up a thrilling final.
The final was so close and played with some brilliant tennis. Captain Ernie and young gun Corey won their doubles to give England a 1-0 victory. Ross was 5-2 up, and it looked like England would retain their trophy, but Tony and Trystan had other ideas!! Tony proceeded to hit line after line, and played some inspiring tennis to win 7-5, and the stage was set, the final match was for the title!! Trystan and Sunny played spectacular tennis, and the match swung both ways. Eventually Trystan's experience and stamina came through and he won 7-5 to clinch the Cup for the euphoric Kiwis.
Murray, Glenn, Tony and Trystan well deserved champions, and as soon as they came off the court for beer and food, the rain started!! It was another great day, enjoyed by all, and ensures more competition for the title next year!!

Sangria Night Roundup !! : March 2007
The Inaugural Sangria Tennis Social went off as well as the Sangria went down, marvelously!! What a group we had, 40 players of all ages and ability were lured out by the promise of alcohol, and they all loved it, the tennis and the Sangria. The format was an all in, play with everyone and have fun social. We had 5 rounds of 8 game sets so we all came off at a similar time which made the drinking easier! Those that won their set had to drink a large glass of Sangria, those who lost had to drink a big glass, so it all ended up pretty even. Some players even stopped after 3 rounds to drink more, but most stayed on till the end. Dean Fripp and Paul Dunningham were still on court, with drink in hand as I was trying to close at 11.35pm, I eventually got them off the court with a promise they could take some Sangria home with them!!
Steve and Sylvia were there till the end, and I must make a special mention of Debbie and Emily Machar who were so helpful in aiding with the clean up/baby sitting duties!
Look out for the next social coming soon!!
Congratulations : March 2007
Congratulations to Academy Junior Celina Goetti, for her recent success in Bangladesh while representing Singapore in the Junior Fed Cup Asia Pre-Qualifying event. Adult News - January 2007
Australian Open Tour What a tour we have just returned from, no-one wanted to come home, they were all truly bitten by the Aussie Open bug!!
21 brave souls departed on the morning of Thursday 18th Jan for a tennis festival, but it was so much more. The hotel was lovely, right on the Yarra River, a 20 minute walk to Melbourne Park and close to some excellent restaurants, bars, the casino and all the action. It was a perfect location, or base to work from, and they are all looking to book for next year already!!! We had some excellent seats for some brilliant matches on the Rod Laver Arena, we saw Safin play Roddick, Hewitt play Gonzales, Mauresmo lose, Serena win, Sharapova grunting, and Federer in form, it was perfect. It all ended too soon though and we came home overawed by the power and grace of all the players.

Welcome Madita Suer (former WTA player) and Tara McDonagh (Bonn University student) joining our staff in reception. We also welcome 2 groups coming in December from Japan and Singapore. Finally it is great to see everyone improving their consistency. Remember the process of progression - consistency, placement, length, spin and power. Have a happy safe holiday summer season.......
Pre-Academy News - November 2006 : by Ebony Banes FAREWELL! At the completion of term 4 2006, I will be resigning from the Pre-Academy Director position to pursue a career as a travelling tennis coach with local up-and-coming players. You may still see me around from time to time, but unfortunately with extensive travel commitments, I will be unable to continue in my current role.
A new Junior Director will start in January. Wes Pope is a local professional with an great reputation for producing quality junior players. He has been running junior programs successfully for many years on the coast and is looking forward to taking over and continuing the growth and atmosphere of programs here at the Academy. He is a fully qualified, dedicated, motivated and organized coach who will flourish in this environment.
Since I took over the program from Michael Mitchell in April this year, it has increased from 75-160 participants and I have met many wonderful children and parents along the way. It has been a great experience within not only my own development as a person and tennis coach but with my students as tennis players and young people too. It has been such a highlight to be a part of the very important learning stages in their lives. Being a part of this program is definitely a highlight of my life so far and will never be forgotten.
I thank everyone for their participation, co-operation and help in developing the program to its current level and wish all students the best of luck with their future tennis playing careers. I hope to see a few more Lleyton Hewitts and Samantha Stosurs reigning from the Pat Cash International Tennis Academy, or at least continuing to play tennis for many, many years to come!
Thanks again and good luck!

General News - October 2006 - by John Birrell This month sees one of the Academy players who has been with us for 6 months return home. Kurush will be missed by the Academy. Recently we have three new full time players join Academy. Athena Nathalia (Indonesia), Danial Joannou (Sydney) and Jane Bychkova (Brisbane). We welcome them to the program and look forward to their enthusiasm and intensity. Belinda Melvey (Sydney) and Lauren Murphy (Sydney) are with us for 3 months and already have shown improvement and commitment. Well done!
FOOTWORK Footwork has always been a major emphasis in my coaching style. I have recently studied the footwork program from David Bailey. I feel this will benefit all the students in the Academy and look forward to passing on this knowledge. There are several tournaments coming up and and I wish everyone success. General News : September 2006 Most of Australia's current top players competed in the Kia circuit men’s/women’s tournament held at the Academy from September 2-17. Great tennis was played throughout the fortnight and many new players trained with us during that time. The younger academy players enjoyed watching the high standard of tennis. In the men’s final, Alun Jones from ACT defeated Robert Smeets from QLD 6/3 7/6. They then teamed up to defeat the twin brothers from NZ, Joes and Mikal Statham 6/2 6/1.
Local Gold Coast player, Shannon Golds triumphed at the women’s event held one week before the men’s. She defeated Adriana Szili from SA 6/2 6/2. Shannon then teamed up with Lucia Gonzalez to win the doubles title against Shona Lee from NZL and Karolina Wlodarczak from VIC 6/4 6/2. Congratulations to Maverick Banes who has set a new Academy Beep Test record of 17.1! The previous record was 16.4. A big welcome to Ricardo Tome from Portugal, who has joined us for some high level training and sparring. Farewell to Daniel Parker who was sparring with us for 2 months. He returns to his home in Cooma – but vows to return ! All Academy players enjoy the high standards these sparring partners set.
Pre-Academy News : September 2006 - by Ebony Banes The Spring Holiday Tennis Camps were held over the term 3 school holidays with record numbers attending both weeks. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was great to help the kids improve their tennis - I really did see some big improvements from everyone over the duration of the camp.
The next camps on offer are the Gold Coast’s leading tennis camps. Our Summer of Fun – Tennis Camps will start the week before Christmas from Monday the 18th December- Friday 22nd December, then continue weekly throughout the summer holidays. The camps are from 9am-3pm daily with free supervision until 5pm if needed. This is a great opportunity for parents to complete some last minute Christmas shopping! Please enrol promptly as spots always fill quickly !
Term 3 saw some big results from all of our players but especially some of our Academy Futures members.
-Congratulations to Nick Hodge (12 years old) who recently broke the previous beep test record of 12.9 and set a new Futures Beep Test Record of 14.0! Well Done Nick! -Other members of the squad represented Hope Island in the Winter Fixtures finals. Four teams were in the finals, three of those teams made the Grand Final and one team won the premiership! Congratulations to Nick Hodge and Alec Hodge who, despite Alec having rolled his ankle, pulled through to take the section 10 flag 2 sets to 1! A great effort to all other players in the Grand Final who narrowly missed out - Ben Stevenson & Johannes Jeske of section 15 who lost 2 sets to 1, and Vini Guifre and Vladim Hlebodorov of section 5 who also lost 2 sets to 1. The other team in finals was Ben Macleod and Chris Searson-Lindsey of section 3.
The Summer Fixtures season is starting on Saturday October the 14th and with 7 teams representing us, we look forward to many more great efforts! Good Luck to all players! Please check in at the Academy after Friday 6th October for draws.
A couple of new coaches have joined our growing team over the past several weeks, so I’d like to welcome Haroon-Jafarey Hall and Ashley Berge. A special congratulations to Ashley who is currently completing her level 2 accreditation.

Adult News : September 2006 - by Mark Cook The latest 10-10-10- was another huge success, the old Monday Night faithful crew persevered with atrocious weather and many postponements, if fact the 5 week lessons actually took 9 weeks to finish (in a supposed drought) The Tuesday group were much luckier with the weather, and all 19 had a brilliant time learning a few new tricks, especially the drop and angled volley which Margo now uses regularly!!
The next series will start Monday October 23rd and Tuesday 24th from 7.00-9.00. For those who are not familiar with the 10-10-10 set up, it is 10 hours of tennis coaching, 10 hours of court hire, and 10 hours of gym usage/fitness classes, all included for only $100. Please ask Mark for more details. The Hope Island Tennis Club is organising its Sunday boat cruise for mid-October depending on availability of the boat!! It will be a 4-5 hour Sunday afternoon cruise on the water, all beers, wines and nibbles included for $50. Please see Mark for more details. Its back, Marks Margarita Madness - welcome to Summer spectacular is soon upon us. Our Friday night extravaganza including tennis, Margaritas, Margaritas, and Margaritas will be on Friday Nov 10th. General News : August 2006 Last month we welcomed a group from Dubai training at the Academy. We also said goodbye to recent players from Switzerland, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and Melbourne. The effort and commitment from the players has been outstanding. The increased time spent on court with the positive direction from our coaches, is really lifting the level of intensity and performance of each individual player. The Michael Easton Homes Australian Money Tournament held at the Academy fro 4-6 August was a huge success, attracting players from all over Australia. The winner of the Open Men's was Colin Ebelthite defeating Lachlan Reed 6/2,6/2 in the final. Congratulations goes to Academy coach Ben Mathias for making it to the Quarter Finals. The number 1 seeded player Daniella Dominikovic took out the Opens Women's final defeating Isabella Holland 6/2,7/6. Due to the Queensland Circuit tournaments we already have a number of new faces using the Academy as a base leading up to and during the tournaments. See our programs to find out more about training at the Academy.
Pre-Academy News : August 2006 - by Ebony Banes - Pre-Academy Director
The continued success of our Pre-Academy programs into Term 3 has seen many groups increase from 2 to 3 courts, and a subsequent rise in the number of days that classes are being offered! A big thank you to all our players for introducing their friends to us.
With only two weeks left before school holidays, it isn’t long before the spring holiday tennis camps will be under way. Held from 9-3 Monday-Friday over both weeks of the school holidays, the program offers not only tennis instruction, but matchplay, scoring and overall motorskill development through ball games and cross-training activities. Bookings are essential and spots are filling up fast - so to ensure your spot, please register your interest today with Ebony Banes on 5530-1177 or 0422 013 054 .
The first annual Parent-Child social tournament held on Sunday August 27 was a huge success. See Mark’s column for his take on things.
Congratulations to Emily Machar from the Academy Futures squads who won the Girl’s 9&U singles event at the recent Taylor Byrne Head Junior Masters tournament held 13-20 August.
The winter fixtures season has almost concluded and with the Hope Island Resort Tennis Club widely represented, we had a number of teams in finals. Well done to all for another great season of tough competition and good luck to all teams involved in the finals!
Adult News : August 2006 The Parent/Child Tournament Social was a huge success with 24 teams competing for the inaugural trophy. John and George Wall beat out Ben and Paul McCloud for the overall winners in a nail biting set, Joel and Leanne Braund beat Vini and Charlie Giefre in the consolation final. There was plenty of tennis, a round robin of 5 matches was played, then the top 3 teams of the 4 divisions went into a sudden death playoff. Everyone enjoyed the hearty BBQ, snacks and drinks, and I was a little surprised that some of the dads hit the beers before it was finished, but they went down very well in the heat! The Wimbledon trip is on, it is 20 June-1st July, 2007 and includes airfares, accommodation, meals, day trip to Paris, 2 days of London, (Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Madame Tussards, etc) a travel card for bus rail tube while there, a large theatre production (probably Cats) and 2 days of Wimbledon. It is a unique package deal, and is only $7450. Contact Mark for more information.
Coomera Waters Update : August 2006 The Coomera Waters Junior Development Programme for Term 3 will end on 16th September. The Academy would like to say a big thank-you to all the students who took part and we hope to see you all back next term. We expect enrolment numbers for next term to be very high, so students are advised to enrol early, as limited spaces are available. All new enrolments should contact John Dutton on 0422 65 4 160 as soon as possible to secure your position for next term.
It is pleasing to see a large number of the children now practicing on the courts with their families and friends. School holidays is a perfect time for families to enjoy the resort’s tennis facilities, so make sure you make the effort. For those who want more organised tennis coaching during the holidays, there is a school holiday programme running here at the Academy (phone 5530-1177).

Winter Holiday Camps Wow! The recently completed Winter holiday camps over both weeks of the school holidays were a big hit! All players had a fantastic time with a mix of on-court work, off-court games, ball skills and fitness as well as organised matchplay and scoring. Many of the younger players who weren’t quite up to playing, were taught how to score using scoresheets and by the end of the week were umpiring their own matches.
All students were rewarded with certificates upon completion of the camps, which were well earned - with many improving in leaps and bounds! Term 3 Begins With term 3 underway from Monday 10th July, spots are filling fast. However it is not too late to book your child/ren in. Our pre-academy programs cater for children aged 3-15. 30 minute classes involving general motor skill development are available for 3-5 year olds looking to get a head start above the rest of their age group. 60 minute sessions are available afterschool and on Saturday mornings for children aged 6-14. Advanced fixture players from 9-16 years old can join our 2½ hour squads which include added fitness components and dynamic warm-ups. We have a program suitable for everyone so please ask us how we can best service the needs of your child/ren. All term enrolments get a free tee-shirt and can be involved in our bring a friend week - Please see me for details.
After the huge success in my first term as the new pre-academy director, I wish to continue with the new lesson plan structure of greater involvement throughout the lesson from ALL students and to include activities that will develop each child's overall skills and abilities. Juniors will also learn how to really play the game of tennis, instead of just how to hit a tennis ball.
Pizza- Matchplay Pizza-matchplay has started again from Monday July 10 and will continue EVERY Monday for the rest of the year. A new fixture-team format with prizes and trophies is on offer. For only $10 for 2 hours of supervised, organised matchplay (with FREE pizza), this session is a great addition to a weekly group lesson schedule.
Rally Ball If your child cannot yet get serves over from the baseline, no worries! Rally Ball is a modified point play program for children aged 6-10. At only $8 for a 1 hour session, this program is once again a great addition to a weekly group lesson to enhance your child/ren’s skills and progress them onto full-court tennis as quickly as possible.
Birthday Parties Have you been interested in a fun filled day with all of the kids being looked after and catered for, whilst getting fit and learning new skills? Here at the Pat Cash International Tennis Academy, we offer you a birthday party package. An Aussie BBQ lunch is supplied including drinks, and each child receives a free tee-shirt. Activities include on-court games and hitting with off-court, enjoyable fitness also incorporated. The star of the birthday gets a signed Pat Cash headband and certificate. Packages can be organised from 1 hour up to a whole day of fun from 9-3. Please enquire at the Academy or call 5530-1177 or Ebony on 0422 013 054 for more details or bookings.
Contact If you are interested in enrolling your child/ren in any of our programs, or if you would like more information on the services we offer, please contact me on (07) 5530-1177 or 0422 013 054 .

The 5th annual Tennis-Golf Tournament was won by Heinrich and Gerhard Mejer. They were 3rd place finishers in the tennis, (tennis was won by Ian Howard and Peter Scurrie), and they were the golf winers!! A great day was had by those who played, but poor morning weather limited the field this year. We will be doing another Golf day soon, at Arundel Hills, so keep your eyes on the notice board for details.
The ever popular Tennis-Lawn Bowls Tournament will be in December again, so start thinking about your partner. I think Gary has asked 4 time world Champion Ian Schuback to play again, so there will be some tough competition. The next big event is the Parent Child tournament on August 27th, which will be a fun filled day!! Plenty of tennis, food and drink for all, and some great competition. Let me know if you need to borrrow a child for the day. We have opened another 20 spots for next year's Australian Tennis Open Tour as the first 25 went so fast. If you are interested, pick up a flyer at the pro-shop, or see me for details.
Mens nights on Wednesday has been hampered by a great State of Origin Series and poor weather, but from now on its clear skies, and no rugby, so come on out for a hit!
See you on the courts.
