PLAYER OF THE MONTH - September
Mav
Banes
Gold
Coast born and bred Maverick Banes has hit marvelous form overseas
this month in a serious of ITF junior events. Mav who is only 15,
had impressive victories over highly ranked Europeans in Serbia and
Hungary whilst traveling with Academy High Performance Coach, Ben
Mathias. Before heading overseas, Mav had a month of intensive
training at the Academy with fellow top juniors; Stephen Donald and
Alex Sanders to prepare for the strenuous clay court series in
Europe. Maverick the number 3 seed reached the final of the
prestigious Talentum Cup held in Hungary, gaining valuable ITF
points. Maverick also a week later then reached the QF of Pancevo
International held in Serbia beating quality clay court
specialists.
Maverick's current ITF ranking of 254 will be
considerably lowered following these impressive results and will
hopefully now be looking to play higher calibre junior tournaments
such as the Orange Bowl and Junior Grand slams. The Academy would
like to congratulate Mav on his recent form and look forward to
seeing him back the Academy in upcoming days. Watch out for this
youngster in future years!
Well
done Mav! |

TIP
OF THE MONTH - by Chris Steel
Footwork
Patterns and Movement Skills I have never
heard of a tennis coach who does not believe footwork and movement
are of vital importance to tennis players. Ian Barclay who coached
Pat Cash to win the Wimbledon Championships has been quoted as
saying “if you don’t have effective footwork and speed in today’s
game, it will be a long road to success.”
The
simple fact is the game of tennis is now significantly faster due to
changes in; court surfaces, technology of equipment, and integration
of superior teaching methodologies. These factors combined have all
contributed to players now hitting the ball much harder. To combat
the extra power of players, opponents now must have proficient
movement capabilities in order to get themselves to the ball in time
to play their shot.
Essentially
the more efficient your footwork the quicker and easier you can
position yourself to the ball and also recover to position yourself
for the next ball. It follows, the earlier you get into position the
more options you will have available on your own shot in terms of
both power and body position.
Therefore
it is important young players start to develop good neural pathways
in the early years of development to ensure good co-ordination and
speed. Without getting too scientific, the neural pathway between
our brain and our feet is enclosed by a myelin sheath. This outer
layer becomes thicker and stronger the more you use it, much like a
muscle grows with increased usage. The thicker the myelin sheath
becomes, the faster the connection between the brain and the feet
becomes. This will allow for rapid movement of the lower limbs and
better co-ordination of the feet and balance.
Coaches
should try to incorporate footwork tasks at every level of
development but especially in the formative years. Tasks can be fun
and innovative as there is a multitude of ways to enjoy training
footwork by coaches and players alike.
So
work those feet !!!! |

FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH - By Nick
Fatigue
As
the weather patterns change and get warmer, athletes need to
be aware of their fatigue risk. We have two main areas to be
aware of.
The
obvious one is our fluid intake. The afternoon training
sessions will be several degrees warmer and we need to be
taking more water/electrolyte balanced drinks on to the court
with us. Between 2-4 litres per session should be our aim
depending on body type and conditions. Athlete fatigue is not
necessarily restricted to that session, it can be cumulative
and present itself later in the week as dehydration
progressively has its affect.
The
second area of concern is to consider sleeping patterns. As
the nights get progressively warmer, many of us fail to adjust
the number of blankets/dooner warmth. If we are too warm while
sleeping it affects the quality of our sleep and can leave the
athlete irritable and tired. Their decision making on court
can suffer accordingly.
So
water and sleep – keep them both in mind to achieve optimum
performance. |

POTPOURRI
Drinks
and What ?! - CAKE
As
young, dedicated and disciplined athletes of the elite
program, a strict diet is required to perform at their
best. However, this week was an exception! The Academy
has had a great opportunity to celebrate Andy Lau
becoming a proud teenager. This now cheeky 13 yr old
from Hong Kong, who lives at the Academy, had the
privilege of receiving a chocolate cake whilst on court
in squad training, much to his fellow players delight.
Instead of drinks and a snack at break time, it was
drinks and birthday cake. A hard earned treat for the
players, who this term have maintained composure and
dedication to produce impressive tournament
results.
Also a special happy birthday is in
order for Sam Duggan (Noosa) who is training out of the
Academy during the first week of the September holidays.
This bright young 13 yr old has also been treated with a
cake from the Academy House Manager Pauline, whose
baking of cakes, scones and muffins is famous throughout
the Academy’s players and staff.
Happy
Birthday boys, and all the best for the
future! |
