NOVEMBER 2007 Newsletter

Message from Chris Steel - Academy Director

Things at the Academy are starting to heat up with the atmosphere and excitement that goes with the approaching Summer of Tennis in Australia. This month has seen Zac Itzstein and Shannyn Ricketts post some impressive results. Check out the results section for their performances.

Elena Ivanova is heading to Belgium to play a Grade 4 ITF, event before heading back to Australia for some training before the Grade 5 ITF in Perth, followed by the summer circuit. Sarah Rebecca Sekulic is also heading back to train at the Academy with a view to build on her recent semi-final success at the Grade 4 ITF in Slovenia, and a Finalist showing in a Grade 5 event in Switzerland, before heading to Perth and Melbourne.

This month sees Academy player Monika Wejnert move her Australian Ranking inside the top 50, which is a remarkable achievement for someone of only 15 years of age. While Sarah Rebecca Sekulic has earned herself a WTA ranking. Well done girls!

On the Academy front there has been a strong push towards the physical side of our players training, with National Titles and ITF events fast approaching over the summer. There have been some notable improvements in Beep Test scores over the past 3 testing cycles.

• Tristan Stayt (19yrs) =       13.4   15.3   16.2
• Tom Price (14yrs) =           14.1   14.5   15.1
• Monika Wejnert (15yrs) =    9.6   10.11 11.11
• Andy Lau (13yrs) =             9.2   10.3   11.11
• Athena Nathalia (13yrs) =   10.4  11.3   11.6
• Celina Goetti (16yrs) =       10.3  10.6   10.10

The Pat Cash ITA has set a challenge to all our players to attain a minimum Beep Test score of their age. These players are already demonstrating their determination and dedication to reach that bench mark in the near future.

See you next month!

PLAYER OF THE MONTH - November

Alex Sanders
Gold Coast resident Alex Sanders, at only 16 years of age has achieved some lofty goals in tennis, which many other junior players aspire too. Last month Alex was rewarded for his impressive results by gaining a spot on the Australian Junior Davis Cup team, representing Australia playing against the best juniors in the world. Hosted in Italy, not only did Alex and  team mates Mark Verryth (Vic) and fellow Gold Coaster Bernard Tomic win the prestigious title, but they won it convincingly beating, Argentina in the final - three rubbers to nil.

Alex’s confidence has increased, knowing he can compete and defeat the world’s best players. With Alex now being recognized as one of the world’s leading 16 and under players, his focus turns to the highest graded ITF events, where he will be looking for impressive results to lift his ITF ranking. Along with the Australian Boy’s Davis Cup victory, Australian tennis is looking bright all round - with the Junior Australian Girl’s Fed Cup team defeating Poland to also be crowned world champions.

The Pat Cash International Tennis Academy wishes Alex all the best for the future!

TIP OF THE MONTH - by Chris Steel

Eating for Success, Not Taste
Fuelling your body during training and competition is imperative to achieve maximum gains out of yourself. Carbohydrates are the most important ingredient for exercise and recovery. Carbs are stored in your muscles and liver as Glycogen with smaller amounts in the form of glucose in your bloodstream.

After training sessions and/ or matches, it is of the utmost importance players replenish their energy supplies within 45 minutes of completing your cool down regime. This would be mandatory if you had more than one training session or match in a day. A larger meal can be consumed later when you feel more comfortable and have regained your appetite.

As a general guide, recovery foods need to be easily digestible food items and include liquids, as many times athletes will not “feel” like eating immediately after exertion. Eating foods which contain both carbs and proteins can assist with the replacement of muscle glycogen and speed the regeneration of muscles.

Some examples of quality snack items include…
• Fruits
• Fruit juices
• Fruit salad
• Low Fat Smoothie or meal replacement drink (e.g. Sustagen)
• Tub of yoghurt
• Sandwich with meat, or vegemite, or peanut butter etc
• Pasta or noodles
• Rice crackers
• Pretzels
• Muffins
• Cereal and muesli bars (low fat)

There's plenty of variety there for you, so stay healthy !

FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH - By Nick

Diet & Weights
When tennis players have their minds on starting a weights program, I am often asked if they should be taking protein supplementation. Generally the physique we are looking for with a tennis player is a strong lower body with a lean upper body. We need to keep in mind that every ounce of extra muscle requires energy for a potential 4 – 5 hour encounter. (on court)

If we have this objective in mind, we will seek strong lean muscles in the gym. This can be achieved by increasing the amount of protein in our normal diet. (more tuna etc.). There is still conjecture about the sheer volume of protein that athletes try to consume in the form of bars/shakes etc. Some believe the body’s ability to process such quantities is compromised and could lead to long term serious consequences in the form of kidney/liver cancers.

It is always important if you suspect any dietary malfunction, that you seek the advice of professionals. Anecdotal stories, magazines, and health shop advice is quite often compromised. Feel free to come and speak with me directly, if you have any questions !

Recent News - Tennis & Golf Tournament
The 5th Annual Tennis and Golf Tournament was an enormous success, many thanks to those who came out for the day and gave it a go!! For once the weather cooperated and allowed a full days play, we were very grateful.

The overall and very deserving winners were Glen and James who had a 2nd place tennis finish and 4th place golf, pipping Peter and Adam by just one place. The tennis champions were Justin and Adam who looked dominant throughout, and golf winners Marshal and Dave who both have single figure handicaps and lived up to the hype and expectation.

It was a wonderful time with loads of laughter, on court and on the course. There were some very interesting swings of clubs and rackets, some effective, some not so, but the whole day was played in a great spirit and enjoyed by all.

The Gold Coast Golf Staff were so helpful and we appreciate their patience with our fun and games immensely. Thanks so much guys.

Congratulations Yvonne, you win a Free Friday Clinic for being November's Member of the Month.

POTPOURRI

Relaxing & Making Friends
The elite players of the Academy are intensely focused on their tennis, however lately a little spark of romance has perhaps crept into the scene. With many celebrations going on at this time of the year such as; staff birthdays, Tennis Gold Coast Dinner Dance and Christmas parties, etc., players are getting to know each other a little better off court also. Not mentioning any names of course (Zack, Tristan, Cory) to avoid embarrassment, the older boys are somewhat laying the foundations and are putting in a lot of groundwork to impress the girls. With new bright clothes and humorous jokes, it seems the effort may eventually pay off, which can be seen at Fish’s 21st Birthday Party.

It showcases the Academy's strong bond between both players and staff. It is almost an extended family with many exciting and diverse people entering the Academy on an ongoing basis, with new knowledge and experiences to share.

Only time will tell if romance blooms, but if not boys – plenty more fish in the sea!

JOKE OF THE MONTH

A tennis player went to the doctor because he heard music whenever he played.

The doctor cured him by removing his head band.
