Message from Chris Steel - Academy Director
This month sees one of our premier players, Jared Easton, embarking on a tour which should include the French Open and Wimbledon juniors. Go get em Jazza!
Long time Pat Cash ITA players Maverick Banes and Alex Sanders have been accepted into the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and as such will continue to develop their games by training at the Academy with financial assistance and services allocated from Tennis Australia.
Locally Joel Braund extended his winning streak by winning the Taylor Byrne event held at Pro One during May beating Luke Morland in the final (see article on Joel below). Congratulations to both players.
15 year old Academy junior Monika Weijnert (pictured right) has had a stellar run in the QLD Open Claycourt Circuit, taking the Ladies Open titles at Bundaderg and Caboolture (and QF at Gympie) firmly establishing herself as favourite to take the Queen of Clay crown awarded at the end of the circuit. Great effort Monika.
From a coaching perspective I am pleased to announce Tennis Australia is recognising our Academy High Performance Coach, Ben Mathias as a premier coach for Elite Players by selecting Ben to take a team of boys away on a European tour which includes the French Open and Wimbledon. Tennis Australia have also accepted my application for the High Performance Coaching Course (formerly level 3/ Elite).
Last month saw the introduction of several new players at the Academy. We would like to officially welcome: Warno Smit (Sth Africa), Nathan Nelmes (WA), Tristan Stayt (NZ) and Alexandra Fisher (UK). We are all hopeful you each enjoy your time here and take advantage of the opportunities available at Pat Cash ITA.
Parent Forum
Finally, all parents are invited to attend the second installment of the Pat Cash ITA Parent Forum. the forum shall be held on Wednesday June 20th at 7:30pm in the Academy Gym. Presenters will include myself (Program Director), Nick McCallum (Fitness Consultant), & Matt Ahlberg (Sports Psychologist). The presentation will include an outline of where the program will be headed along with some additional structural changes in the content of the program.

SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS
Academy junior Joel Braund is on what you could call " a bit of a roll". He has won the last 7 tournaments he has played in, dropping only two sets in all these matches!! His 34 match winning streak is still alive, and he has no intentions of it stopping soon. He has seen his State ranking jump from 59 to 4, has a current Australian ranking of 620, and this is his first year in the 14U age group!
Joel won the Beenleigh Age unseeded, beat first and second seeds at the Azzura Junior Classic and Brisbane Open Age tournaments, and is hoping to maintain his streak at the next few events. When asked his secret Joel replied, "well if I told you it wouldn't be a secret."
Joel is training at the Academy with Mark Cook. |

TIP OF THE MONTH - by Chris Steel
FOCUS & CONTROL
When playing matches there are; things we have control over, things we have influence over, and things we have no control over. A large part of being a professional athlete is taking care of the first aspect…Things we have control over!
To give some examples;
No control – the weather, the temperature, the surface, the balls, time scheduling, the draw, the opponents abilities etc
Influence – the tempo of the match, the score, the opponent’s level of play, the result of the match, etc
Total Control – my emotions, my reaction to circumstances, my tactics, my shot selection, my attitude, etc
Many players fall into the trap of spending their time and energy concerning themselves with aspects which they have little or no control over, and fail to offer attention to details they have direct control over (both on and off the court). When playing tournaments, there are a variety of components which you have 100% control over. Below is a list of aspects to consider…!
• A dynamic warm up
• Adequate hydration and fuel
• Change of attire for long matches (or multiple matches)
• A competitive outlook irrespective of the score
• Your reaction to hitting the ball less than your true ability
• Your reaction to your opponents play
• Your reaction to adverse circumstances
• Your attitude regardless of the situation
• Your body language
• The language of your self talk between points
• Your reaction to losing or winning
• Your cool down activities
• Your physical recovery activities
From a Sports Psych perspective the idea is to “control the controllable” and as a consequence you will spend less time worrying or mulling over circumstances you can do little about. Coincidentally if you direct your attention to aspects under your direct control, the only possible outcome is success at achieving those outcomes - because you CONTROL them…! This is a large part of building confidence and also major asset in dealing with pressure situations.
Try focusing your attention in these areas during matches and be amazed by the incredible affect it has on your performance.. |

FITNESS TIP - By Ian
Stretching
Suppleness or flexibility (under normal circumstances) refers to the range of movement or motion of a joint or group of joints. The most common factor affecting flexibility is the inability to stretch to an optimal length. Flexibility is an important factor in all aspects of human movement, especially in sport-related activities. Limited flexibility results in limited movement and a greater possibility of injury, and quite possibly a lower level or performance as an athlete. Proper stretching can help to:
- Prevent injuries
- Improve biomechanical efficiency
- Increase range of movement, allowing for greater speed and power
- Improve co-ordination between muscle groups
- Improve muscle relaxation and lessen muscular tightness
It is very important to remember to do your stretches, both dynamic and static on a regular basis - before, during and after training !

The Monday night is for the intermediate/advanced players, Tuesday for beginners/lower intermediates. We have 10 signed up for Monday, and 19 for Tuesday!!
FYI
The first Monday night of every month is now eagerly anticipated by those who love to play singles. The inaugural Monday, on May 7th had a very strong field of 22 players who came despite some impending weather problems. After a 15 minute squeeqy, most courts were ready, and the battles went on. Unfortunately the battles were cut short by torrential rain coming down 15 minutes later!
The format is 3 matches, each one a total of 10 games. You will hopefully play 3 people of a similar standard. We had all levels there, big hitting wide serving Justin, undefeatable Joel Braund (now on a 9 consecutive tournament and 53 match winning streak), Rip 'em down the line Ross Taylor all looking to win the A division. Ex Newcombe/Roach hitting partner Bill, 4aces Morten, and coach Heinrik all played some close games until rain stopped play. There were some close match ups, and everyone enjoyed their short time on court.
We are looking forward to the next Monday singles, June 4th to do it all again. Spots are limited to the first 26 people, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment. Cost is $15, and please call Mark to sign up on 0416016854. |

POTPOURRI
And that's CRICKET ??
Congratulations to Pat Cash Senior Administrator Michael 'the Fishman' Fisher and his indoor cricket team for their recent success. Michael managed to twist the arms of Academy coaches' Ben Mathias and Andrew Olle to come down for a match. Mathias proved to be an intimidating force in the field despite his strangely unproportioned body, taking several crucial catches with his baseball-mit like hands. Andrew Olle also gave English cricket fans a rare reason to celebrate with a swashbuckling 21 runs off 10 balls. However all hats must go off to the Fishman, who proved that he is brilliant on the sporting-field as well as in the office, with a dazzling 40 runs off 19 balls, leaving the final score at 189 to 27 in favour of the Pat Cash boys. |
