Message
from Chris Steel - Academy Director
This
month sees the return of many of our premier players who have been
away on tour;
Jared Easton returns from his 7 week European ITF tour
which he competed in the French Open and Wimbledon Junior Events.
Alex Sanders returns from a successful 5 week ITF tour of Asia and
South Africa. Alex improved his ITF ranking to inside 200.
Celina
Goetti, Maverick Banes and Elena Ivanovic all returned from a 2 week
ITF tour in Darwin. Monika Weijnert returns from ITF Pro Tour events
in Asia. We welcome each of these players back, and congratulate
them on their efforts abroad.
Locally
we have had some exceptional results with Joel Braund being crowned
14U National Champion to compliment Maverick Banes 16U National Clay
Title earlier in the year. The Academy also welcomes new comer
Stephen Donald (ITF Top 10) who is training at the Academy for 5
weeks before he departs on a tour with our Jared Easton for the US
Open Junior Event. Alex Sanders & Maverick Banes have also been
selected in National Tours of Asia later next month. Congratulations
to all!
Last
Month also saw a group of 20 players attend the Academy for one week
of intensive training. The players were joined by Coach Steve Storer
and included both boys and girls ranging from 8 to 20 years of age.
The players were put through their paces by the Academy Coaches and
a great week was had by all. We are hopeful this will be an annual
trip for Steve and his talented group.
See
you next month!

SPECIAL
CONGRATULATIONS
CONGRATULATIONS
- Joel Braund : State & National Champion 14U (July
2007)
The
incredible winning streak of 13 year old Academy junior Joel Braund
is still alive. In a run of matches that has seen him break Raphael
Nadal’s 73 consecutive victories, Joel is on a 77 match winning run
in local Junior Tournaments. That’s 15 tournaments in a row
! His most recent successes were in early July in the
Rod Laver State Championships and the Winter Nationals the following
week. As the 8th seed in the State Championships, he went on to
easily win the prestigious 14U State title. He then followed up the
next week by heading into the Winter Nationals unseeded, and once
again claimed the title in the 14U singles.
Joel’s
already back to normality in school and his regular training at the
Academy, but with local TV and newspapers queuing for interviews,
that won’t last for long. Great effort Joel !!
Also,
Celina Goetti has just returned from competing in 3 ITF
tournaments. Her first was in Fiji where she reached the
semi-finals of the singles. Her second and third were Grade 3
events in Darwin, where she won the Consolation Draw the first week,
and made the semi-finals in the 2nd week, defeating #2 seed
Kelly Blake, but eventually losing to the overall winner Janelle
Cuthbertson. Cellina's ranking has now moved to an all time
high of #560 on the ITF Junior Rankings...WELL DONE "MUSCLES
GOETTI." |

PLAYER
OF THE MONTH - July
Athena
Nathalia Athena
is from Indonesia and has been training full-time at the Academy for
the past 10 months. During this time, her game has improved in leaps
and bounds, and as a 13 year old, just recently reached the SF in
the Rod Laver State Championships in the 14U girls singles. In the
recently completed Taylor Byrne Beenleigh Age, Athena was the winner
in the 13U event. The Azzura Taylor Byrne and the Brisbane Open Age
tournaments also proved a successful hunting ground for Athena, as
she was the runner-up in both events.
Not
only does Athena love to play tennis but she also enjoys hobbies
such as shopping, listening to music, playing the guitar, talking to
her friends and going to the movies. She also enjoys other sports
such as golf and scuba diving – and of course she really loves it
here in Australia !

TIP
OF THE MONTH - by Ben Mathias
PROFESSIONALS
& CONTROL
"Don't
let things lose you matches that you have control over"
Once
you walk onto the match court, there are many things you have no
control over. e.g.
-
your opponent can play well - your opponent can get
lucky - you can get a bad bounce - you can get a bad line
call - etc etc
These
are all things that you can't control, that can cost you matches!
There
are so many things that you can't control on a tennis court, that’s
why the PROFESSIONALS take care of the things that they have control
over so well. Some examples:
-
Training - Warm ups - Equipment - Injury prevention
stretching etc. - Scouting Opponents - Diet -
Sleep
The one other thing that you have full control over on the
court is your SERVE, that’s why it is so important to PRACTICE YOUR
SERVE ..

FITNESS TIP OF
THE MONTH - By Nick
To
improve your dynamic movement in all directions, try the
following drill. As in the diagram, mark out space on the
ground like a noughts and crosses game (see red). Stand in the
centre square and lunge progressively around the square. Make
sure your hips and shoulders face in the one direction
throughout. Attempt 10 laps maintaining good vertical
spinal posture throughout.

Winter Camps – June/July
The Winter Camps held over June and July were a great success
with record numbers turning out. Wes was very happy with the
improvement shown by so many of the young players – both on their
technical side and matchplay. The next camps will be held from
September 24-28 and October 1-5. Watch out for the enrolment
forms!
3rd Term 2007 We always have places
available for new enrollments, so even though the term has already
started, you can still sign up. See Wes or academy reception for
details. |

heated up, and it’s great to see so many of you now playing
every Monday night. A special mention must go to Morten Furst,
who plays so hard every week, and has had more tie-breaks than
anybody else. Well done buddy, great to see you out there. So
all you other singles fanatics out there – Monday is your
night….come along ! Tuesday Night Social

they just did not want to stop playing. So there is now a new

there are always plenty of laughs and social banter amongst
the players. It is open to anyone who just wants to come out
and have a hit. The level ranges from beginner to
intermediate, but they are more concerned with a great time on
court, making friends, and having a laugh. Costs
