Deputy Premier Gives Hope
Island Resort Thumbs Up 27th
February 2006
One of Australia’s largest private diversified property companies and the
Queensland State Government joined forces in a unique partnership
to provide new bridges and roadworks valued at more than $6 million on Hope Island
on the northern Gold Coast.
The Queensland Deputy Premier and Treasurer The Hon., Anna Bligh
officially commemorated the completion of those works by Walker
Corporation at a special function in Hope Island Resort in mid-March.
Walker Corporation’s Queensland State Manager Peter Saba
said the company undertook the works on Hope Island Road as part
of its provision of infrastructure and also on behalf of the State
Government.
“The work took nine months to complete and involved the
construction of two bridges and the associated road approaches,” he
said.
“Hope Island Road has been in need to a serious upgrade
for some time and these works will not only make it much safer
for residents, but also for all motorists who travel across Hope
Island.”
He said the Walker Corporation worked in close consultation with
the Department of Main Roads and in particular Eddie Peters district
director of the Gold Coast operations of the DMR and Jack Donaghey
manager of transport planning DMR.
“We are able to complete the work on time and on budget
and by duplicating what we were going to do we have delivered significant
savings to the State.”
Walker Corporation is developing the $650 million Hope Island Resort which
will ultimately have a resident population of 5000.
Developer Lang Walker purchased Hope Island Resort in 2000 and
since then has invested millions of dollars in infrastructure and
upgrades in and around the development.
The Hope Island Resort marina and Marina Village Shopping Centre
adjacent to the major road works now services a broad section of
the northern Gold Coast community and it also earmarked for further
expansion.
The recently completed $4 million Harbour Point commercial building
which is part of this precinct is now fully leased. Walker Corporation
re-located its Queensland head office from the Brisbane CBD to
North Point amalgamating it with its Gold Coast/Hope Island Resort
operations.
The official commemoration of the completion of roadworks by the
Deputy Premier Anna Bligh was attended by more than 50 invited
guests including residents and community and business leaders from
the northern Gold Coast.
Mr Saba said Walker Corporation was delighted the Deputy Premier
could attend and officiate.
